Overview:

The LCD Keypad shield is developed for Arduino compatible boards, to provide a user-friendly interface that allows users to go through the menu, make selections etc.

It consists of a 1602 white character blue backlight LCD.

The keypad consists of 5 keys — select, up, right, down and left.

To save the digital IO pins, the keypad interface only uses one ADC channel.

The key value is read out through a 5 stage voltage divider.

I bought it two weeks ago, and received it a week ago. It's fast for the free shipping.
Connected to Mega2560, uploaded the default LCD1602 code. I saw power red led, but nothing on the display. I turned the brightness screw 2 times but no change. No hello no data. Contacted the support, problems solved. It was the path fault, not the LCD itself. (Posted on 4/25/13)

You can't beat it for the money. I wasn't sure about the shield part at first, but it does allow me to focus on programming. I'm not sure what I'd do if I needed to get an external signal into the Arduino, but at this price point it doesn't matter. Great product! (Posted on 9/30/12)

This board is called a shield because it is pin compatible with and piggybacks right on top of the Arduino board. It has a 2 line x 16 character display and 5 input keys plus a reset. The keys are configured like the cursor keys on a PC having a left, right, up, and down as well as a select. So, with this shield in place, the microcontroller can be used with only a power supply and doesn't have to be tethered to a computer. The keys provide input and the LCD provides the display.
