DMR Up and Running

The SainSmart Multi-Mode Digital Voice Modem was a breeze to get up and running. No issues during the startup.

No repeater no problem.update

Great product and service seller answered questions super fast. Easy setup and a lot cheaper than the shark. Helps make DMR an great addition to ham radio. Update: It's been over a week now and the modem works great. I live in an apartment where I can't have an antenna, so this little device helps me make worldwide contacts from home. I have also used this hooked up to a portable battery pack which make this great while I'm out of the apartment just using the wifi hotspot on my cell phone.

So far, so good, works well for DMR

Using this at home for DMR use mostly along with a SharkRF openspot. Switching between them, no real differences noted to anyone I talk to. Handy since it uses wifi which the SharkRF (older version) doesn't. Would work very well in a mobile application with a good internet connection as well, am considering doing this. Although the display is small, its actually pretty handy and the pi-star application that is included on it gives you a nice display of the callsign and who is talking. If you need a hotspot, I'd suggest it for sure, it works very nicely. The only thing I didn't like was the straight antenna, it might get in the way depending on what you're doing. A 90 degree antenna of the same type was had on here for 80 cents apiece, though you had to buy ten. I have been giving out the extras at ham radio meetings. Seems to be a very popular hotspot for DMR and other uses from what I'm hearing as well and the software has frequent updates. You can't go wrong with this!

Works great!

I got the hotspot for running DMR, was nice that it came assembled and configured with the Raspberry Pi. All I had to do is configure the WiFi and a few more settings, ID, callsign, etc... and I was up and running. Works great, highly recommended.

Good quality product, Perfect!

This product worked right out of the box. It is the first time I worked with a hotspot. I was a little concerned because it did not come with any instructions. First, I had to find the wifi on my computer. After plugging it in, I found the SSID, pi-star, and selected it. Then I entered the password, raspberry, and entered http://pi-star on my browser. Once configured, I programmed it for my wifi, and rebooted the hotspot. It worked first time. This is a great product.

Easy to set up. Took me 20 min to get on the air.

I originally passed on this but came back after talking to some hams about this product . I did my research and watched you tune there are good videos that help. Had it running in 10 min. I found it easiest to take out the memory card and setup wifi from web on computer.. I guess there is a wifi way but didnt try.

Works great, but some things to know

I already had experience with pi-star on two other devices so it was easy for me to setup. Trick is if the WiFi does not connect after a few minutes it will create its own AP that you can connect to. Look for WiFi names pi-star. Then you can browse to http://pi-star and do your configuration. However, I ended up booking up a monitor and a keyboard and just edited /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and added all the different WiFi networks I would be using. It is important to note that the WiFi will NOT work with WEP, make sure your WiFi is WPA.

A Great Multi-Mode Device for Amateur (Ham) Radio Operators

What can I say but it worked right out of the box. I changed the callsign to my own and did a few minor tweaks to the web-based configuration and we were up and running in less than 10 minutes. It should be noted that there are ZERO instructions with this device...nothing. If you have assembled similar devices (Pi-Zero's, SD card, MMDVM board, etc.), you'll find it easy to use this fully-assembled device. Pi-Star software comes preloaded making it all the easier to use and tweak to your own specific needs and uses. It also comes pre-configured for a wi-fi network. Just set up a wi-fi network (temporarily) with your own router/access point so it can connect then you can access the device through your web browser using Pi-Star. I'm impressed with the quality and price of this device. Why transport your existing digital voice interface when you can afford to buy a few of these and leave them in place? Just bring your compatible digital ham radio along...much easier and less gear to transport. 2018-05-29 This device continues to work very well on an extended trip via wi-fi provided via a variety of methods including iPhone, hotel connections, etc. 'Have purchased another one. It is working well too. Great device and Pi-Star free software makes it easy to update it.
