When I bought my first Genmitsu 3020 PRO MAX V2 CNC Router, I wasn't new to building things. I'd already spent over twenty years as a machinist, fabricator, and car builder. Building, fixing, improving, and figuring out how things work has always been part of who I am. What was new to me was CNC woodworking. Although I had spent years machining metal, woodworking with a CNC was an entirely different challenge, and that's exactly what attracted me to it.

From Machining to CNC Woodworking

Like a lot of people, I thought I was simply adding another tool to the garage. My plan was simple: to learn the software, make some signs, gifts, boxes, and eventually tackle some higher-end woodworking projects. I figured I'd make some sawdust, have some fun, and add another skill to my toolbox.

I honestly thought I was just buying another tool. I had absolutely no idea I was starting one of the biggest engineering projects I'd ever take on.

I've never been very good at leaving things alone. If I see something that can be improved, my first instinct isn't to replace it—it's to understand it. I start asking myself why it works the way it does, where its weak points are, and whether I can improve them. That's how I've approached machines most of my life, and my little Genmitsu turned out to be no different. That way of thinking has probably cost me more hours in the garage than I'd ever want to admit... and honestly, I wouldn't change a thing.

When a CNC Router Becomes an Engineering Project

What started as a completely stock Genmitsu slowly became something entirely different. One modification led to another, and before I knew it I had converted the machine into a 3040, designed and machined my own aluminum gantry plates, upgraded to HGR15 linear rails, reinforced the gantry, and continued improving almost every part of the machine. Every time I finished one upgrade, I was already thinking about the next one. My wife has heard me say, "I think this is the last upgrade," more times than either of us can count. She stopped believing me a long time ago, and honestly, she's usually right.

Solving the V2 Z-Axis Challenge

One project I'll probably never forget was adapting the newer Genmitsu V2 Z-axis onto my older machine. At first, I was told it really wasn't designed to fit. Most people probably would have accepted that answer and moved on, but I couldn't. Not because I thought anyone was wrong, but because I wanted to understand why. So, I started measuring, comparing dimensions, designing brackets, and machining parts. My first design actually worked, but I wasn't happy with it. It solved one problem while sacrificing more Y-axis travel than I wanted. It worked, but I knew it could be better. So I went back to CAD, redesigned everything, machined a second set of brackets, and ended up with a much better solution that kept almost all of my travel while giving me the stronger V2 Z-axis I wanted.

That project reminded me of something I've learned throughout my career. The first solution isn't always the best solution. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is step back, rethink the problem, and build it again.

Precision, Projects, and the Maker Community

Somewhere along the way, something changed. I still love making projects. Whether it's woodworking, inlays, aluminum parts, or whatever idea happens to be floating around in my head that week, creating something is still why I bought a CNC in the first place. But today I get just as excited improving the machine as I do making something with it. I can spend an afternoon with a dial indicator chasing a couple thousandths of an inch because I know those tiny improvements add up. Most people would probably think that's boring. To me, that's where the fun begins. Every little improvement teaches me something about rigidity, precision, machining, or problem solving, and that knowledge carries into every project I build afterward.

Looking back now, I sometimes compare pictures of my machine from when it was brand new to what it has become today. I don't really see aluminum plates, rails, and upgrades. I see hundreds of hours of learning. That's probably the biggest surprise of this entire journey. I bought the machine because I wanted to make projects. I never expected the machine itself would become my favorite project.

One thing I also never expected was becoming part of such a great community. I've learned from other builders, shared my own ideas, and had complete strangers help me solve problems that I couldn't figure out alone. I've also been fortunate enough to have several of my projects recognized by SainSmart through Maker Highlights and community contests. I'll be honest, that still humbles me. Not because I think my projects are better than anyone else's, but because someone else looked at something I built and thought it was worth sharing. As a maker, that's an incredible feeling.

People sometimes ask me what my next project is, and the truth is I honestly don't know. I usually have ten or twenty ideas floating around in my head at any given time. Some of them will work, some won't, and that's perfectly okay. If my years as a machinist, car builder, and now

CNC builder have taught me anything, it's that failures usually teach you more than successes. Every challenge forces you to think differently, and every project leaves you knowing a little more than when you started.

I'd like to thank SainSmart for building the machine that started this journey and for continuing to support the maker community that surrounds it. I'd also like to thank everyone in the Genmitsu community who has shared ideas, answered questions, offered advice, or simply taken the time to follow along with my projects. This hobby has introduced me to some incredible people and taught me skills that I'll continue using for the rest of my life.

When I bought my little Genmitsu, I thought I would add another tool to my garage. I never imagined it would become an engineering project, a creative outlet, and a way to connect with makers from around the world. Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing.

If there's one thing this journey has taught me, it's that every challenge is simply another opportunity to learn something new. Every project leaves me knowing a little more than when I started, and to me, that's what being a maker is really all about.

The Next Chapter

This journey is far from over. The 4030S is the next chapter, and I'm looking forward to seeing not only what I can build with it, but what it will teach me along the way.
