This machine works great for small machining. I like using the mach3 software a lot better than grbl as it can handle a lot more and has way more features. I recommend making sure ALL the screws are fully tightened as they have come apart on me a few times. The only thing I don't like is the Z-axis holder did come apart as the brass screw that holds it broke free from inside the plastic holder and there's really no way to fix it without getting a whole new part. Other than that it has been working great wood working small projects.
I actually been wanting to do more custom printing for some of the game boy projects I have going on and this works great. I can 3d print a case and then engrave it using this. It is not exactly for beginners but it is a good learning tool to have. In terms of assembly, it does require some assembly but it is made easy with majority of the parts being pre-assembled. The instructions are straight forward but it can take some time to get it fully assembled. For me, it took about one hours to fully assemble as this was my first time. The tip was actually the easiest thing to install out of the whole device. It is packaged pretty well so you do not have to worry too much about it being damaged upon arrival. This is something you should handle with care. There is an emergency stop button (although I hope I do not need to use it) if you need to stop the machine for any reason. From what I can tell, it works with several different software but does come with one if needed. It can be hooked up via USB A to USB B cable. The program took me awhile to get used to and honestly I had a lot of screw ups at the beginning. I tried different materials like wood, metal, and plastic and it all worked pretty well once I got the hang of it. It is a bit loud so do not expect it to be something you want to run at night. It gives a pretty clean engrave and it is very easy to clean up afterwards. The side panels keep most of the debris from flying out which also helps with cleaning. It covers all of the surface area but it is pretty easy to tell the device where to start engraving. It does not require too much upkeep from what I can tell other than cleaning the mess. I do not see any need for any lubricant or anything. You may need to replace the tip at some point but overall this is a solid device. It is a great thing to have if you want to start new projects. As stated before, I mostly use this to engrave names onto game boy shells I created. It is a good kit to have but it does take some trial and error to learn it. I messed up quite a few times, but the software was pretty easy to follow and adjust to. It does support windows 10 and 7 but I am not sure about mac OS as I do not have the equipment to test that. Overall this is a solid device. I found this easy to use and learn from. It has not broken on me, does quick and accurate work on pretty much any material. Also easy to clean.
This is my third 3018 from SainSmart. Initially I got the regular 3018 and then decided to step up to the 3018-MX3 with it's updated safety features and more professional software. I've been happy with both and at first I wasn't sure I wanted to upgrade again so soon, but boy am I glad I did. Even though the MX-3 only took about an hour to set up this one comes mostly preassembled and it's the more difficult bits that are already done which made it go much faster and let me get right to using it instead of spending extra time in setup. The three biggest upgrades for me from the MX-3 (aside from the sexy blue finish) are the sturdier frame, the emergency stop button (which I hope to never need, but feel much better having), and the z-probe having a preinstalled connector to attach to the board. This definitely my go to machine when I start a project now.
